The efforts of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown and to provide students with continued access to studies during this period have seen a commendable jump in e-learning in the country.


Both schools and higher education institutions have started adopting different methods of online classes and sharing study material based on the resources available to themselves and students. Their scope ranges from planned online classes through platforms like Skype, Zoom, Google Classroom, Google Hangout, Piazza, teachers uploading lectures and class notes via YouTube, WhatsApp, themselves, sharing links to digital learning resources like NPTEL  And extending access to online magazines.  

About 50-65 percent of the students in higher education institutions like Central Universities, IITs, IIITs, NITs, IISERs are connected with e-learning in some form.  Due to the lack of internet connectivity and other essential digital structures that students have, e-learning has been seen to be interrupted in many cases.  To mitigate this problem to some extent, in addition to lectures and live sessions recorded by teachers, slides or hand-written notes are also being shared, allowing students with networked uncertainty to at least some materials To be achieved.  


Recorded lectures ensure that a short-term problem of network availability cannot interrupt any student.  Faculty members are conducting online chat sessions with the students to answer any questions they may have. Since 23 March 2020 till date, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has witnessed an unprecedented reach of over 1.4 crore jointly across various e-learning platforms.  


The national online education platform, 'Swayam', has been accessed nearly 2.5 lakh 

times till yesterday, marking a five-fold increase in the 50,000 strike figure in the last week of March.  These figures are in addition to the approximately 26 lakh learners already enrolled in 574 courses available on the 'self' platform.  Similarly, around 59,000 people are watching videos of 'Swayam Prabha' DTH TV channels daily and more than 6.8 lakh people have watched them since the lockdown started.


A similar boom has been seen with the ministry and other digital initiatives of the institutions under it.  

The National Digital Library was accessed 1,60,804 times yesterday, in just one day, and about 14,51,886 times in the lockdown period, compared to about 22,000 times per day previously.  

Education portals of NCERT, like Deeksha, e-Pathshala, National Repository of Open Educational Resources,

NIOS Higher Secondary Courses, NPTEL, NEAT, AICTE Students - College Helpline Webportal, AICTE Training & Learning (Atal), IGNOU Course, UGC MOOC Course  , Shodhganga, dissertation, scholar, e-PG school, and other ICTs like Robotics Education (e-Yantra), Open Source Software for Education (FOSSE), Virtual Experiments (Virtual Labs) and Learning Programming (Spoken Tutorials) too.  

A large number of access is being received.  Union Human Resource Development Minister, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the Ministry is promoting the study through television for large number of students who do not have computer and internet facilities.  

He further stated that the group of 32 DTH channels of 'Swayam Prabha' group 

is broadcasting high quality educational programs using GSAT-15 satellite, 24X7 and its contents NPTEL, IIT, UGC, CEC, IGNOU.  , Is provided by NCERT and NIOS.  

Similarly, through IGNOU's Gyan Vani (105.6 FM Radio) and Gyan Darshan, a 24-hour educational channel, students from pre-school, primary, secondary and higher secondary, college / university students, students looking for livelihood opportunities,  Presenting excellent educational programs for housewives and working professionals.  The Minister urged the students to make maximum use of these channels also to enhance their studies.
